NEW YORK (AP) -- Edward W. Said, a Columbia University professor, literary critic and leading spokesman in the United States for the Palestinian cause, has died, his editor at Knopf publishers said Thursday. He was 67.--snip--He prompted a controversy in 2000 when he threw a rock toward an Israeli guardhouse on the Lebanese border.

Comments:
Yeah...that guy.

Amanpour will be heart-broken over this news.

Scholar? May he not RIP.

Reply 3 - Posted by: Det. Charlie Nicholls, 9/25/2003 11:08:47 AM

Too bad. His lit crit and fictional biography added such warmth and happiness to the world.

My mother taught me that if you cannot say anything good about the dead, just say nothing.

So my remarks re the passing of Mr. Said are as follows:

Reply 5 - Posted by: Allegra, 9/25/2003 11:11:24 AM

Oh, gee...I'm all broken up.

Expect to be big flattering portraits of him everywhere in the lefty press.

Another lying liar.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Tanstaafl, 9/25/2003 11:12:07 AM

Who says there's never any good news?

Reply 7 - Posted by: mwild, 9/25/2003 11:12:40 AM

I wish I could summon up some compassion for him but the man was a liar and an agitator so I can't. I will, however, extend condolonces to his family. Someone must have loved the man though I don't understand why.

Reply 8 - Posted by: TeacherNet, 9/25/2003 11:13:42 AM

Palestinian Scholar???

Oxymoron Alert

Reply 9 - Posted by: acuto, 9/25/2003 11:15:05 AM

I hope they buried him with a thermos of ice water and an asbestos blanket.

Reply 10 - Posted by: Puter Boi, 9/25/2003 11:15:31 AM

He will be missed.

{snicker}

Reply 11 - Posted by: citizen1, 9/25/2003 11:17:55 AM

A bad day for the Said family.
A good day for Columbia University.
But knowing them, they'll undoubtedly replace him with someone even worse.

Reply 12 - Posted by: Opinionated Blowhard, 9/25/2003 11:20:10 AM

He's gone now, lets let him rest in peace.

Reply 13 - Posted by: broadway_dave, 9/25/2003 11:22:41 AM

"He prompted a controversy in 2000 when he threw a rock toward an Israeli guardhouse on the Lebanese border. "

And yet he lived another three years. Fortunate man.

Reply 14 - Posted by: veritas, 9/25/2003 11:24:34 AM

If they can dance in the streets...

[O-o-o-o-o-o, nasty, Mr. Veritas. Very nasty. Think "Kumbaya thoughts!"]

Reply 15 - Posted by: dbaa, 9/25/2003 11:26:45 AM

Columbia University established the 'Edward Said Chair of Middle Eastern Studies' about a month ago, and installed a fiercely anti-Israel Arab professor in it.

Reply 16 - Posted by: acuto, 9/25/2003 11:27:38 AM

#14, great idea. I think when I get home tonight I'll pop a cold one and indulge in some celebratory gunfire in his honor.

Reply 17 - Posted by: carp, 9/25/2003 11:29:22 AM

Say hello to Hitler, Ed.

Reply 18 - Posted by: foont, 9/25/2003 11:32:31 AM

One of the many who have worked day and night to ensure that peace in the middle east would never come about and that America's essential evil never be forgotten.

Sometimes the death of a man enhances the world.

Reply 19 - Posted by: ScienceMike, 9/25/2003 11:33:21 AM

Well, they say these things come in threes.

Here's hoping...

Reply 20 - Posted by: recallhillary.com, 9/25/2003 11:34:22 AM

Dr. Said, along with the venerable Dr. Bernard Lewis, have offered the most balanced analysis of how both sides' misdeeds have prolonged and deepened a dispute whose consequences range far and whose carnage (including on our shores) continues. I'm sorry for the vitriol and nastiness directed toward Dr. Said as his corpse is barely cold.

Reply 21 - Posted by: GOPJihad, 9/25/2003 11:36:09 AM

What's the reaction on the "American Street"?

I guess al-Jazeera will be looking for Americans blasting their AR-15s in the sky and handing out candies in celebration of Said's death?

Reply 22 - Posted by: veritas, 9/25/2003 11:36:28 AM

... we can be excused for not mourning.

Reply 23 - Posted by: acuto, 9/25/2003 11:44:19 AM

#20, I didn't realize that protocol required us to wait until he reached room temperature. Sorry for the social faux pas.

Reply 24 - Posted by: WeenerDog, 9/25/2003 11:44:28 AM

In memoriam, I plan on consuming a prodigious quantity of bacon.

Reply 25 - Posted by: BerkeleyThomas, 9/25/2003 11:48:18 AM

May he find his just reward in eternity.

Reply 26 - Posted by: Dolphish, 9/25/2003 11:51:08 AM

The harm this man has done to men of good will across the globe is difficult to measure--although his Marxist politics should earn him a spot in eternity with other greats of Soviet-type philosophy (wherever that may be, God only knows).

Reply 27 - Posted by: citizen1, 9/25/2003 11:51:18 AM

It's a sick joke to compare Edward Said, the cowardly rock thrower, to Bernard Lewis. Apologies are due to Professor Lewis.

Reply 28 - Posted by: Url Fud, 9/25/2003 11:52:48 AM

Said was a fraud. He wasn't even a Palestinian. He was an Egyptian.

Reply 29 - Posted by: Italiano, 9/25/2003 11:55:38 AM

Ouf of respect for the deceased, I propose that we all observe a moment of silence..OK, that's enough.

Reply 30 - Posted by: Newtsche, 9/25/2003 11:57:53 AM

If #19 is right -- Chomsky, Zinn, the bell tolls for thee.

Reply 31 - Posted by: dixiedarling, 9/25/2003 12:07:46 PM

None of my comments are suitable for a lady.

Reply 32 - Posted by: newfem, 9/25/2003 12:10:27 PM

I'm sickened that my immediate thought was "good".
My mom used to say that when you die and go to heaven, all your questions will be answered. I think he's been forgiven and Said now knows how wrong he was.

Reply 33 - Posted by: Ripper1, 9/25/2003 12:13:32 PM

I am sorry when anyone dies of cancer, but If Said where hit on the head by a falling flower pot, I owuld not cry over it.

Reply 34 - Posted by: waltlear, 9/25/2003 12:18:08 PM

#32, if I believed in an afterlife I would agree that he now knows how wrong he was. But forgiven? That's not a part of his religion. And those religions that adhere to forgiveness demand contrition, Said had none.

Said's work makes it impossible to discuss the mid-east conflict in many academic settings, let alone propose solutions.

I feel the same way about Said's death that I will about Arafat's, Saddam's and Bin Ladin's. Ding Dong, the witch is dead.

Reply 35 - Posted by: bird, 9/25/2003 12:26:41 PM

Comparing Edward Said to Bernard Lewis?

Dear God...

Reply 36 - Posted by: shelley, 9/25/2003 12:37:13 PM

I first was exposed to Edward Said my first year in graduate school. It was that essay about the word 'Oriental.'

Reading it, I wanted to die.

Reply 37 - Posted by: valleystorm, 9/25/2003 12:57:56 PM

Edward Said was neither a scholar nor an intellectual. He was a liar about his own personal history, virulently anti-American and a supporter of the slaughter of Israeli children. He will not be missed.

Reply 38 - Posted by: Brown Bear, 9/25/2003 1:16:42 PM

One of the small joys of my life is the pleasure I take hearing about the deaths of evil men. I felt great satisfaction when I saw reports on the deaths of men such as Generalisimo Francisco Franco, Mao Zedong, Nicholai Ceausceau, Ayatolla Khomenei, Pol Pot, Uday and Qusay and Idi Amin.

I look forward to a small celebration when we finally hear reports of the deaths of Fidel Castro and Yassar Arafat. Perhaps a party will be in order when we have confirmation of the deaths of Saddam and Osama.

May they receive their just rewards.

Reply 39 - Posted by: SmithL, 9/25/2003 1:21:15 PM

#4 speaks for me, too.

Reply 40 - Posted by: The Army of Northern Virginia, 9/25/2003 1:23:59 PM

He was a sickening leftist, anti-American apologist for all sorts of tyrrany. The public discourse on American foreign policy in the middle east is well-served with his death.

Reply 41 - Posted by: killerbee, 9/25/2003 1:26:10 PM

Although I feel no sorrow at his passing, I do fear that he will now be considered a hero of the faith and his writings/rantings will gain the status of those by truly great thinkers.

Reply 42 - Posted by: Islamaphobe, 9/25/2003 1:30:36 PM

"Tis the will lf Allah.

Reply 43 - Posted by: Tinkerdoo, 9/25/2003 1:31:11 PM

With Said's passing, does that make 'Yes-sir I'ma rat' the last standing Palestinian scholar??

Reply 44 - Posted by: TeacherNet, 9/25/2003 1:33:28 PM

#20 - Said was a complete fraud, in his so-called work and in his "palestinian" heritage. He advocated violence and promoted "understanding" of suicide bombers.

#32 - If you believe in heaven, then you must believe in hell too... I think you got his direction mixed up, he definitely is not going "up" to meet his maker.

Reply 45 - Posted by: ForNow, 9/25/2003 1:39:28 PM

Said’s life was a Sieg Heil! to Islamofascist tyranny.

Reply 46 - Posted by: archiebobarchie, 9/25/2003 1:46:53 PM

#20, Said was the Palestinian version of Noam Chomsky. I'm not going to celebrate his death, but I certainly won't celebrate his life's work. He was a major contributor to idiotarianism worldwide.

Reply 47 - Posted by: Hobbiest, 9/25/2003 1:56:32 PM

An apology is owed to Bernard Lewis. Said was nothing but a left wing propagandist hiding under a scholar's robes.

Reply 48 - Posted by: cake crumb, 9/25/2003 2:16:10 PM

The world is better off without him. Unfortunately, his place will just be taken by someone even worse. Remember, when speaking of rabid anti-Semitists, there is ALWAYS somebody worse.

Reply 49 - Posted by: Oswald Booth, 9/25/2003 2:29:41 PM

Reply 50 - Posted by: cake crumb, 9/25/2003 2:34:12 PM

One more thing: may Yasser join him soon.

Reply 51 - Posted by: Oswald Booth, 9/25/2003 2:34:48 PM

Said - you're in! May you rest in urine.

Reply 52 - Posted by: TunnelRat, 9/25/2003 2:37:07 PM

Gonna need two pallbearers...

or are there more handles than than on a Palestinian garbage can?

Reply 53 - Posted by: erp, 9/25/2003 2:53:08 PM

Let us be charitable to Mr. Said. Perhaps his vitriolic hatred of Jews and Israel was caused by his illness and the drugs he was taking to ease his pain.

If that is the case, I apologize for my unkind thoughts because I hope that, instead of 72 virgins waiting for him in paradise that he was led to believe would be his fate, there are the corpses without number of all the victims of Islam, the religion of peace, lined up to speed his descent into hell.

Allah insallah!

Reply 54 - Posted by: trog, 9/25/2003 3:02:24 PM

Edward Said
was said, well read
While hate thought was regurgin'

He thinks no more
Lies 'neath the floor
All nestled with the virgins

Reply 55 - Posted by: Mountainman, 9/25/2003 3:33:38 PM

How about those Mariners ?

Reply 56 - Posted by: sheMarmot, 9/25/2003 4:00:37 PM

It would be tacky to indulge in a bottle of champagne to celebrate his demise- but how about one glass?

Reply 57 - Posted by: Schwalbe, 9/25/2003 4:01:41 PM

I'm not familiar with muslim celebrations. Do I use hollow-points or Full Metal Jackets in my SKS rifle?

Reply 58 - Posted by: gumbino, 9/25/2003 4:06:02 PM

#38, what did Franco do that you rank him amongst the likes of Mao, Pol Pot, and the Saddamites?

I don't know a great deal about Franco, but I don't believe he was a mass murderer. Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

Reply 59 - Posted by: acuto, 9/25/2003 4:24:52 PM

That was my feeling. Having to chose between Francisco and the alternative, a communist dictatorship, Spain was infinitely better off under Franco.

Reply 60 - Posted by: steveW, 9/25/2003 4:32:29 PM

Anti-Semites the world over are in mourning.

Reply 61 - Posted by: Cato_the_elder, 9/25/2003 4:34:52 PM

#20: Lewis and Said despised one another and agreed on virtually nothing. They have both devoted sections of their books to criticizing each other.

In addition, it seems a little odd to praise the impartiality and "balance" of a scholar who was caught on film heaving rocks at Israeli tanks.

Reply 62 - Posted by: Jebediah, 9/25/2003 4:58:47 PM

There were so many lies puported by this man about himself that it boggles the mind (if I recall, birth in Palestine, economic level, etc.)and yet it looks like he wrote his own obit.........and thus lies become fact.

Reply 63 - Posted by: Ceci, 9/25/2003 5:07:38 PM

As a poster at Little Green Footballs once wrote, the less Said the better. Amen to that.

Reply 64 - Posted by: Kalle Severinsson, 9/25/2003 5:29:57 PM

Well, he was one american whose death I'm not sorry to hear about.

Or just desert, as the case may be.

You know the old saying - people who throw rocks shouldn't live.

Reply 72 - Posted by: Toby, 9/25/2003 8:17:46 PM

Though I am Jewish, I know his sister who is charming. We just don't discuss politics. The family is Palestinian Christian, not Moslem and lived for many years in both Egypt and Lebanon. The sister considers Lebanon home. The brother is known as being one of the leading intellectual apologists for the PLO, just a ghastly thought.

Reply 73 - Posted by: aquilegia, 9/25/2003 9:01:57 PM

Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia.

A PhD, a life of "teaching" (no heavy lifting) and he lived "most" of his life in the United States.

Save being President, or King, this man lived as not 1 % of the world's population lives.

He lived a life of absolute privilege and luxury, yet he was consumed with hatred. Go figure!

Reply 74 - Posted by: usmcsarge, 9/25/2003 9:40:00 PM

Sorry, but I won't shed a tear.

Prepare yourselves for an avalanche from the elite institutions about what a "national treasure" he was, etc. You get the picture.

Old Marine sarge

So, because he's dead, we must now confer sainthood on him.
sheesh

Reply 76 - Posted by: yeahsuredad, 9/25/2003 10:39:04 PM

From another website..."Edward Said diagnosed with rigor mortis".

Reply 77 - Posted by: Victory, 9/25/2003 10:47:18 PM

When an apologist for, enabler of, and celebrator of KILLERS dies, it behooves us to pause, smile, and respectfully move on with a certain smug satsifaction tinged with regret it didn't happen sooner. This was a VERY bad man who gave a cover of scholarly legitimacy to some of the worst murderers since Hitler. Good riddance.
